Stock Photo Images of Bitternut Hickory Tree Carya cordiformis

Bitternut Hickory Tree Carya cordiformis . A new set of stock photos by Ernie Hunter A relative of Shagbark Hickory but the nuts are bitter. Even squirrels won't eat them. The hull is thinner and ribbed. The wood is used for lumber, tool handles and athletic products like Lacrosse sticks. It is a good shade tree having a large umbrella canopy. The buds are a bright sulfur-yellow colour and are covered by a powdery coating. It is monoecious with both male and female flowers produced on the same tree. Trees can live up 200 years.
