A new set of stock photos by Ernie Hunter Shagbark Hickory wood is hard, strong, tough and elastic and used in handles for tools and in athletic equipment as well as lumber. Excellent firewood and used to smoke meat. Its loose-plated bark give it it's name. The nuts are enclosed in a thick husk which separates at maturity. They are sweet and used in cooking and are food for squirrels and other forest animals. Shagbark is monoecious having both male and female blossoms. Trees are slow growing and hard to transplant.
