Goldenrod Crab Spider Thomisidae Misumena vatia. A new set of stock photos by Ernie Hunter It is the largest and best-known flower spider some growing to ten mm. Found in the fall on Golden Rod but on many other flowers earlier in the season. Males are much smaller than females. Their venom is very strong to immobilize bees and wasps before being stung. They use no web but wait motionless for passing prey grabbing it with their huge front legs and like lightning biting it to inject paralyzing venom. Golden rod being the last flowers in fall provide the greatest access to food. View more stock photography from Ernie Hunter here.
